Mallon Marume, the young Zimbabwean who won an international poster design competition has returned to Zimbabwe after a trip to France, which was the main prize for his poster win.

Liz Dziva, publicity and public relations manager of MultiChoice Zimbabwe, said Mallon Marume of Mutare Boys High School won the 2015 DStv Eutelsat Star Awards competition’s poster category, taking the prize from thousands of entrants all over Africa. As winner, he won a trip to France to visit various scientific institutions, a trip he describes as ‘just amazing.’

Each year the competition seeks to promote knowledge and understanding of the role of satellites in communications technology, and it is sponsored by MultiChoice Africa and its satellite partner, Eutelsat. The competition is made up of poster and essay categories, with winners at country and continental level. Marume won the country and continental sections of the poser design competition, and was rewarded with a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

“He visited Eutelsat’s headquarters, as well as Airbus Defence and Space, the France 24 television network and a number of leading tourist attractions in Paris, in a visit in which he was accompanied by his father, Stephen Marume,” said Ms Dziva, who also undertook the trip.

“We met a great many people, including Zimbabwe’s ambassador to France, Ms Rudo Chitiga, and this was a chance for a young man who is interested in science and technology to make important contacts as well as build up his own knowledge base.
This was the second year in a row that a Zimbabwean student won a major prize in the international competition, with a Zimbabwean student having won the essay competition section in 2014. The competition was created to stimulate interest in science and technology in general and satellites in particular, and features a section for poster entries and another for essays.

Mutare Boys’ High School received a satellite dish, television, DStv decoder and a smartcard enabling viewing of the DStv education bouquet, as a result of Mallon Marume’s achievement.

Entries are now sought for the 2016 competition and forms can be obtained from any MultiChoice office or downloaded from www.dstvstarawards.com. Deadline for entries is 30 November 2016.
